The city I live in puts on a really good party for the 4th. They usually have a live band in the afternoon until around 6, then the city orchestra plays from 7 until dark. Then it's time for a 30 minute pyrotechnics show set to music. All of it is free. Last year we got rained out. This year, I doubt it'll be a problem.

Best way to do it is to just take a shot for a baseline, and change settings from there. With fireworks (not so much sparklers, but things that explode), you have to find a good balance. And obviously, shutter time is pretty important if you want to be able to catch things, as if you're too short you risk a miss and too long gives you too much streaking and leaves more room for jitters. Tripod is almost a must unless you're using a real camera (sadly, I'm not).
