02-27-08, 04:36 PM #1My Network Tale
So guys, I have finally been cleared to get full access to the school network and in turn the internet! This has been a rough trip, it all started 3? 2? weeks ago when I chose to change my OS from 32Bit XP to 64Bit XP in conjunction with 64Bit Fedora, not that the Fedora matters just a side project.
So any way. My school requires that any computer hooked into the network is cleared by a program called Cisco Clean Access. Well guess what program does not have 64 bit support? CCA. Well this means that I would for ever be given "restricted" access. This sort of access limits the length of time that I may be logged into the internet and the various places I could go on the internet/network. Every 30-45 minutes I would lose connection.
So I email the network administrator and ask if there is a solution. He responds yes, we clear your MAC address and you would be good to go. However, for them to clear my MAC address they need to see my physical computer and see that I have a running Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and Windows updates and all set to auto-update. So no problem I do set up all of the above and visit the IT department on my campus. The Tech checks the settings gets my MAC address and tells me I should be set. I go ok, cool.
I then bring my rig back to my room set it up. No dice. So I email the guy from a school computer, because the "restricted" access doesn't let me access the school servers(my email). I tell him that I did not get through but it was the weekend(school closed early because of a snow storm) and he replies yesterday with an appology saying that he cleared someone else and not me that he is sorry.
So I didn't get this email until this morning when I am yet again in a school computer lab. I email him saying I have NO access. He then responds quickly apologizing he had locked me from the network rather than allowed me on the network!
So free at last free at last! I am back watch out!
Now I just need to fix a few drivers and everything is back to normal.
