It takes a little bit of practice...
Just try it out on flat land first (ie not up a ledge / over a wall...)

Grab can.
Look up, about 45degrees from horizon view.
Click the throw button then the melee button. (At about double-click speed, one after the other)

That's it!

It helps if you are moving forward too... You can get it even higher by doing that mid-jump, but I found it more difficult to actually get the basic timing down while in the air...

Have a few tries and you'll know when you 'get it'. Aim higher to get the cans up and over walls etc...

Also, you may need to adjust your timing when in different instances of ping.
(ie for green bars, it needs to be quick, for red bars it works a little better if you leave a slightly longer gap between the click...)

Good luck, hope that helps... It's a great little skill for maps like the Rooftop where you can easily throw the cans up a level, or the Park where you can throw them straight over the walls and hedges allowing you to run through the little maze at the generator with a gun in-hand... Oh, and you can throw them right off the top of the billboard at the Motel straight onto the floor, minimising the risk of a spitter getting the cans that would have been on the roof...

It's also handy for loosing the gnome in Healing Gnome, as I found out earlier.
