BTW Heres a couple setups for that merlin your flying. It relly is NOT a railboat, and you'll see why when you set this one up!
PVE:
[Merlin, New Setup 1]
Capacitor Power Relay I
Magnetic Field Stabilizer I
Monopropellant I Hydrazine Boosters
Stasis Webifier I
'Anointed' I EM Ward Reinforcement
Small Supplemental Barrier Emitter I
Modal Light Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Antimatter Charge S
Modal Light Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Antimatter Charge S
'Malkuth' Rocket Launcher I, Gremlin Rocket
'Malkuth' Rocket Launcher I, Gremlin Rocket
[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]
Which is great for L1 Mission running, But if you want to wander around the PVP field:
[Merlin, New Setup 1]
Magnetic Field Stabilizer I
Magnetic Field Stabilizer I
Monopropellant I Hydrazine Boosters
Stasis Webifier I
Fleeting Progressive Warp Scrambler I
Cap Recharger I
Modal Light Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Antimatter Charge S
Modal Light Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Antimatter Charge S
'Malkuth' Rocket Launcher I, Gremlin Rocket
'Malkuth' Rocket Launcher I, Gremlin Rocket
[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]
Which can be used for Mission running as well. In fact, I would suggest this set up for mission running you'll get good practice at keeping up your radial velocity on the appreach!
If your into reading a little, here are two great guides I've been throwing at everybody so far:
It says rifter guide, but this info is good for every frigate pilot:

Excellent tanking guide for everyone to learn from:

So here is my Merlin's current config:
1 x 150mm Carbide Rail 1, using Tungsten charges.
2 x Small STD Missile Launchers, using STD Pirahna small missiles.
Small Shield Booster 1
Power Diagnostic System 1
That's it, and I am barely getting this to work. Anybody have a spare Photonic CPU Enhancer, a few Reactor Capacitors laying around?

Mind is a little frazzled right now, but I'd recommend contacting Bunni to have him help plan out these first few weeks.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.

BAH! Railguns take too much PG.... and blasters have much higher DPS, and on a frigate, you get within optimal quick enough. Also, Use rockets they have a slightly higher DPS at lower PG usage as well. And because you're using blasters you'll be close enough. Furthermore, its better to hit the merlin with a passive tank (Yes, its better not to have a booster!) an EM hardener will let you last much longer at less than half the cap cost. If all else fails, warp and dock with a station and bam! shields are maxed again. no bigie in a frigate. Last, PDS' are great, but DPS is better so the more magnetic stabilizers you can put on the better! (find a good balance, but two Magnetic field stabilizers increase your DPS by nearly 7 or about 20%.

A Passive shield tank uses modules to increase the passive shield recharge. A buffer tank uses shield extenders and shield hardeners to extend the amount of time that the ship can fly without wasting too many modules on the tank. And finally speed tanks use the speed of the ship in relation to other ships to exceed the tracking speed of others' turrets and avoid being hit in the first place.(Obviousely the most difficult, but with just a little practive it can be better than any other tanking style. However, it should always be used no matter what ship/tank you're flying.)
Finally, every tank has weaknesses. For example, shields are particularly weak to EM and Thermal damage while armor is weak to explosive, kinetic, and moderately weak to thermal damage. so we use hardeners to improve these defenses. putting an EM hardener on a shield will practically double its effective HP(how much raw damage coming in before resistances are applied that the shields can take when resistances are applied.) The same is also true of putting explosive hardeners on an armor tank.
With the merlin being a frigate, it is best to try to speed tank. (Come in a 45 degrees, enter a close orbit) However, to supplement the speed tank it is better to put an EM hardener(or mission specific hardener) and if wanted, a small extendor rather than using a shield booster which will drain your cap in seconds.
