    Unemployment Party

*Party... saw it was missing right as I clicked post.

So gave notice 2 weeks ago, tomorrows the last day. For those of you who don't know I'm a dispatcher at UPS.
Pretty much been getting shafted since day one but stuck to it for the experience. Now, recruiters are drooling over my resume. I was pushed over the edge when a week I get for vacation every year, CES week, was black listed because we changed business managers and my boss was afraid to ask if I could have it off. It sounds dumb, it sounds like there has to be more to the story but that's it. He is catching heat and fears loosing his own job he didn't want to ask about my vaca week. It's in January which is usually a black listed week because it's peak season. But, I always got it off before. And I find out the OMS officer got the week off, we have unrelated work, a belt sup go the week before it off.

So I go to my boss to ask for the day off so I can driver my father to the airport for the trip I should have been going to. He says no problem. The Preload sup over hears this and wants to know why I can't come in and leave early or stop by after I drop him off.

-Because I would be coming in for 30 minutes... I'll see if I have time after I drop him off.

-Well it's either you come in or you take the day.

-Okay, then I'll just take the day.

-That's if we give you the day.

    -2 weeks, see ya.

The fucked up part is I'm partying Friday night with that guy and his brother.

I'm off the work for Frito-Lay! Hopefully. They are giving me a tour Friday, along with 3 interviews and a lunch.

    re: Unemployment Party

Everyone says that, always get "oh UPS, that's a great company"

If you haven't worked there you don't know. If you want to hear you boss threaten to run you over and harpoon your ass work for UPS. We had a guy violently vomiting unable to see because he lost his glasses in the process and still be told your not going home get those packages in the car, work for UPS.

It gave me a lot of experience and took me from an unemployed college grad to an in demand operation supervisor though. And, some friends for a poker night.

Work at UPS also as a belt Sup. He's right, everyone always says UPS is a great company, which it is, but there are days when you think the company is ran by monkeys.

That's why I never went management, I could see the monkeys trying and I preferred much less stress and going at my own pace (what you going to do, try and fire me? Why not focus on the fuck who doesn't show up once a week...)

    Re: Unemployment Party

I've learned to dislike Unions. When I was a loader the union rep and I were good friends. We talked and said hello whenever we saw each other. As soon as I got promoted and he saw me walk in with a collared shirt, didn't even look at me. No joke. It's amazing the company is as profitable as it is with two groups with two different motives constantly clashing. Protect the product or protect the employee? And like you said Abi, employees who don't show up multiple times a week.... sorry rarely do I get to vent this to people who understand outside of work. lol

Yeah it all depends, plenty of hard workers and plenty of lazy people too. I never paid dues, was a member, ext, but I enjoyed the coverage from my position and only ever used it when managers tried to screw me over. They asked me if I wanted to go supervisor, but I almost laughed in that Full Time Sup's face. I couldn't stand her as an all but untouchable hourly, you think I wanted her to run my life?... I did enjoy bitching to no end when given one of the worst sups ever... (No I will not log into this scanner and go work on a different belt while you do MY work here and I load a shitty trailer instead of work air smalls...)

    Re: Unemployment Party

    So weird...

I also worked at a UPS hub when I was in college. Joined the union (mandatory), paid dues, etc. Part-timers got screwed from both sides.

I loaded, then went to the primary sort.

I found some things to like about the company, and things to not like. Same goes for the union.

Some guys I knew took the tie; and a few ties mentioned to me that I should consider supervision. I wasn't interested. A UPS paycheck payed for a good part of my tuition, and I don't have any ill will. When I left I had a BS, a union card, and forearms like Popeye.

Same here. I worked hard, but that could just be because my spirit wasn't (yet) broken. The thing that wore on me was that there was rarely any upside to putting in a good effort. Still, it was a good college job. It paid less than it should have, but more than flipping burgers.

    Re: Unemployment Party

Welcome to corporate America I work for one of the largest employers in the country and it's all about the numbers metrics metrics metrics and they don't give a fuck about the employee just meet the fucking numbers. They just yesterday said two Saturdays will be required this month, I told my tech manager sorry but no dice and to go ahead and break out the PPI and let the pencil whipping begin. I haven't heard a reply. The stupid part is if we need a day off we have to give them 2 weeks notice but we're told half way thru the month that 2 sat's are mandatory. Fuck them bitches!
