Many mods require editing pak01_dir but if I edit it I am unable to load the game. For example with

FPSBANANA > Skins > L4D > Weapons > Hexaludes M14 enhanced

and

Left 4 Dead Mods - Left 4 Dead Maps, Skins, Mods, Scripts & Custom Content • View topic - LED Flashlight

I can not apply the changes and then load the game. Even if I copy and paste the exact file from the folder that comes with the mod it allows me to get into the game but crashes during the loading screen to a single player campaign. I've reinstalled twice and I can only seem to play with the original pak01_dir. I've tried editing with Notepad and Wordpad and even tried going case sensitive.

Mods that don't require me editing the file work fine.

Hmmm...ya got me on that one...I don't do a lot of modding. If that file only works if it is the original, is there a way in some config file somewhere, where you can tell it to look for a different file name? That way you could copy the original, hack it all up to your heart's content, and just have the game look for it instead of the original...I am just guessing here...you might have better luck in the L4D Mods section.
