My friend opens L4D that has just been installed. The loading screen pops up and says it's loading. Then he says that when he looks on his friends list, under his name where it says "Left 4 Dead" in green shows up. Then it disappears and the loading window closes. That's about it.

Have your friend go to the Can You Run It site and do a scan to make sure that their PC meets the minimum specs.
