How old was the dog when you rescued him.

My girl and I got 2 rescues and typically speaking if rescues learned bad habits with the prior owner it's hard to turn them around.

It's pretty evident that one of our rescues was beaten to no end.

Anyhow, even though your dog was out of line and even though you've had him for 5 years and think that he knows the way things should be, he may not yet understand what the big deal is. He may have already pissed inside without you knowing it and simply because of that he may think he can pee anywhere. I don't really have any tips for ya so good luck with him.

No one really knows how old he is. He does have a few grey hairs so he's not a youngin but if i had to take a guess somewhere around 10. He was tossed out of a car in the middle of traffic on a busy road right where i live so my sister picked him up. He's had issues and had his little smacks here and there but that was the first time he went that far. I think he was testing the waters and figured out he would just drown if he keep at it. Since he has been better than he has ever been. Yeah he has pissed in the house but with 4 dogs you cant just smack one and hope you got the right one. He just got a little bold and needed to be reminded where he has to go.
