well, it looks like a no-go. All other releases of the catalyst software for 64-bit vista will not install stating that I have incorrect hardware. strange considering I have 9.3, and I tried 9.4 and 9.2. I'm going to format and install XP to see if this solves anything. If nothing else, it'll give me a few more fps.. I'll let you know how it goes in a few hours.

Sorry. Meant xp 32-bit. The OS install is under a week old. You said you're running the same gfx card as me (x800) with catalyst 9.3 and running vista 64?

    CONFIRMATION:

Legacy Catalyst 64-bit drivers will NOT allow L4D to function. This affects my X800GT and previous model ATI cards it would seem. Installed XP Pro and 32-bit drivers, and game runs flawlessly. Might be worthwhile posting as an abridged sticky?

That is good information to know. Sorry you had to go through all that baloney just to figure that out.
