I can assure you that the actual in-game admin tasks and server configurations aren't being changed by those who don't own the game.

I get that your frustrated about the loss you had today, but one thing to consider is the lack of admin functionality outside of the game. In order to schedule automatic restarts, we have to do that outside of the game. In order to send a message to all players 10 minutes prior to the restart, we have to be in game. I think it's a little unrealistic to expect admins to login 10 minutes prior to every day restarts just to send out a message about it.

The only solution here is to have messages spam the in-game chat box every so often or in the motd format. Either way, it's not ideal, and there is no functionality in the admin panel for this automation.

It's either we don't do auto restarts daily, or we do them with the motd notification that the server restarts at x time daily. It's not a limitation of us, it's just not built into the game or into the admin console.

I believe the lesser of the two evils is to do them daily, but add the restart time to the motd.

I guess War and I were posting at the same time so I will change my response a bit. Ditto to what War said and I will look at this when I get home this evening. There wasn't any real way of making soft restarts with warnings in the past but maybe they have added something recently.

There was also an issue back in the first few months with the constant updates and whether those could be automated. A few folks had created external scripts to do a "check every x number of minutes for updates" and if one was found then a shutdown, update, restart was done. I don't believe there was any type of warning to the players for this. Now for the work around.

There is an option to change the auto save period. By default it was 15 minutes but we quickly changed that to every 5 minutes, it is possible to lower that still but we would want to see what impact that might make on the game and server resources.

From what I've read auto save can lag the server. Every 15 minutes is fine.
