Thread: Why did you stop playing whatever you played before ARMA 3 ?

I'm curious what games other people came from before jumping into ARMA 3 alpha/beta. Why did you switch? Were you pushed away or pulled towards?

My story: I'm a longtime online FPS player (Quake 1 CTF/TF was probably my first serious addiction quickly followed by counter-strike). I still remember that magical day when some kind soul taught me how to fix up my binds and make the switch from 100% keyboard to the all-powerful WADS+mouse (I actually prefer ESDF). Desert Combat mod for BF1942 (El Alamein!)was the last time I played a game with large maps and truly multi-faceted combat (land, air, infantry). Kinda skipped the CoD series (I played CoD4 a bunch but found the maps so small). Anyway, I found the TPG Counter-Strike server several years back and was in heaven. Well worth $5/mo to have access to a community of mature and skilled players who cared about strategy. I got back into CS in a serious way and loved it.

Fast forward to DayZ about a year ago. I'd heard great things about the gameplay atmosphere (who doesn't love zombies?) and knowing something about TPG made it an easy purchase choice. However, I could not handle the bugs of ARMA 2! While the gameplay was great, I quickly realized that most of the powerful strats were based on bugs or weaknesses in the game. Two prime examples being: 'watch for zombie spawns' and 'limbs glitching through walls'. This pissed me off because it detracted from what was otherwise a very realistic and immersive experience. I only played DayZ for a couple months and I'm still tempted to fire it up again sometimes.

I rarely buy a game without playing it first as I did this time, but based only on some hungover breakfast ranting by Ace22, I made the leap. ARMA 3 continues to impress - zero regrets. I used to be really excited for the DayZ Standalone release (still am somewhat) but if it does not live up to the quality of graphics and physics of ARMA 3 I think I'll have a hard time switching. Bugs really can kill the fun of a game.

Wolfenstein was probably my earliest jump into the FPS genre, followed by a lot of the classics. Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, etc. Played Battlefield 2, call of Duty 1, 2, and Modern Warfare. Also had a love for RPGs, strategy games (starting with command and conquer all those years ago), and MMOs. I generally don't limit myself to one genre.

As for the ARMA series? I'm sadly one of the few introduced to it only through the introduction of Day Z, but I quickly came to appreciate the game for more than Day Z (thanks to watching communities like ShackTac), even though I never really joined in those massive operations.

What did I stop playing for arma 3? Nothing, really. I'm still a competitive player in the mount and blade: warband community, I still play the occasional game of league of legends, and I just started with company of heroes 2. That's not to say that arma 3 failed to life up to expectations, per se, rather that.. I've experienced all arma 3 currently has to offer unless I start learning how to make and code maps of my own. Arma 3 runs like shit, basically, when it really shouldn't, and that fact has dried up a lot of potential content I could enjoy (even playing wasteland on TPG after the server has been running for an hour + is disgustingly sluggish), and all that's really left is trying out single player scenarios and campaigns.. but there aren't any, really. Few are released, and even the best made ones are hindered by either terrible design, or ARMA's own limitations.

Still fun though.

I wont say that I "quit" playing other games to come to this, I just merely added it to the stupidly long list of games I attempt to split my time between.

I do know Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament is where I got big into gaming.

Joined various leagues, played in collegiate gaming league, CAL, ________.

I have been around the block like a cheap whore. I've played a wide range of FPS.

Wow, where do I start...

First FPS ever was Wolf 3d, Doom followed shortly after. LAN play with a 10base2 coax network was a blast on Doom.

First online FPS was Quake, oh the days (and long nights, seriously 24 hours straight on a baud modem). Grappling hook mod and Navy Seals was the Holy Grail for my Quake experience. Team Fortress pretty much did me in.

First serious online gaming was Counter-Strike. I played professionally with a group of local guys and together we won a lot of cash and hardware throughout the years. Our first and only LAN loss was to Team 3D (with Rambo, Ksharp, Bullseye and Fatal1ty joined for the event) at Million Man Lan 3 I think. Bullseye got pissed that we went knives after we knew we lost, said something about "honor".

Around that time it was a hodge podge of things. BF1942, Desert Combat, ect.

Finally got to play DayZ about a year ago, then noticed the Arma scene. That about wraps up my FPS history.

Great responses all! It makes me feel nostalgic reading some of your title lists. So many forgotten soldiers over the years. Suffice to say we all had different paths to get to ARMA 3 and still go about our PC gaming in our own personal way. Love it. So many games, so little time. I wonder if there will eventually be a site like IMDB for games.. Like abandonware sites now I guess but bigger. Hmmm.
