    Photoshop

So Im a newb at photoshop. I've only used it a couple of times. I got an image of a terrorist that i want to place on a TTP wallpaper im making. When i first open up the image i can move just the character around. But when i go to save it and then try and place it as a new layer i get either a black background or a white and black checkered back ground with it. How do you guys put in an image of a character without a background with it?

Im sure its something im overlooking but i just cant figure it out

The black and white checkerboard is transparent.

If you are getting a colored background check "Layer 1" and see if it has color. If it does just use the "Background Eraser Tool" or select "Layer 1", select all and then press delete.

    Hope this helps.

Also.. if you're looking to make an image with a transparent background... sometimes it won't let you make the bg layer transparent.. if you erase it it'll often just make it your "background" color... what I do in this case is make a new layer that's transparent and lock the transparency (there's little check boxes on the layer tool for each layer, one with a little square of the grey/white alternating blocks like what enumae just posted.. check that box) then delete the background layer.. the transparent layer will become the bg with transparecy locked.

To save a transparent image, go to file/save for web... a new window will open with some drop down menues on the right hand side.. in the "Settings:" drop down menue select PNG-24

If you are trying to take an existing image and move it onto a new project and that image is locked it will not transfer over to the new image. you need to go to select, then "all" then edit "copy and then paste it into your image. It will go in as a new layer in the project you are working on.

Also when you make a new project select transparent option from the background dropdown.
