    Advice needed

    Heya.

I'm kind of stuck with a dillema. OK, first some backstory. I currently found out that there is no denying that I have an outdated computer, the harsh truth. Now, I've got three options: live with it, upgrade, or buy a new computer. Before I can make this decision, I have got to some other things to keep in mind. In about a year and a half, when I'm finished with High School, I'm planning to go to Australia for a year. This costs a lot of money for me, but as it's going now I'll manage. Secondly, if I buy a new computer and go to Australia for a year... it'll be outdated by the time I get back. I don't want that.

So basically, my problem is; I've got an outdated computer, I've got some money but want to keep as much as possible in my pocket, and I'll be gone for a year. You might imagine that I don't want to buy a whole new computer as it's very expensive, and I'll only be able to use it to the max for 1 1/2 year. As for upgrading, I don't know how much more I can 'pimp' my computer up. I'll give you my current specs, and I'm asking for your adviced, as most of you have much more knowledge about computers than me. Hope ya can help.

    CPU: Intel Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40 GHZ
Total RAM: 767 Mb (I'm pretty sure I'll have to upgrade this)
Video Card: ATI RADEON 9600 (AGP)

I don't know if you need more information, but if you do, feel free to ask.

I know I do not have much RAM compared to the norm, which is now, what, 1Gb? So I'm willing to invest my money in that, if it'll be of any use. I'm afraid my 2.40 Ghz holds back my overall performance (I don't know though?). If that's the case, than I would rather not upgrade. Furthermore, another drawback is my video card... again, I have no clue how 'good' (or bad) it is. I mean, suppose I'd have all the RAM in the world, but still wouldn't be able to play any next-gen games because of my videocard. It'd suck. Even suckier, I've got an AGP videocard; if I've got to upgrade it, that'll cost me, as (good) AGP cards are rather expensive. So, what to do? Please try to keep the back-story in mind.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Griffin.

Hmm, I guess it all depends on what you're looking for. A PC gaming machine?

If you're looking to be able to run the newest upcoming games then you'll have to upgrade RAM and VIDEO. Perhaps even the PROCESSOR. So more or less you'll be looking for a new computer. DUAL CORE, 2GIGS of RAM, and a good VIDEO CARD (which can get expensive).

If you're looking for a PC to run the net, work on graphics, play some games from time to time, then you're not in bad shape actually. You should upgrade the RAM, thats a given. Get to a minimum of 1GB. You'll still be able to play newer games, just on the lowest settings, so be prepared for low frame rates and some frustration. But you can wing it.

In my opinion, if money is tight and also being saved for an education, save it. The PC you have right now is a bit older, but it isn't out of the fight just yet. I'm posting on a P4 3.0.6 GHz, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9550 256MB video. I also own a Dual core system, but I'm still using this as my main computer and I have no issues.

First off, thanks for the replies. I will at least be upgrading my RAM, me thinks. With some luck I can play the newer games, then. I might just buy a slightly better video-card as well, if it isn't too expensive.

If you were serious about gaming, and the future, you'd greatly consider buying a brand new system. Reason being is your current PC runs a (correct me if I'm wrong) 478 socket processor which are... outdated, to say the least. Not to mention DDR memory is old news (to the ignorant that is, I still find DDR400 fine), and well, AGP, is enough said.

They are your limitations. AGP cards are being slowly phased out but an even old by todays standards PCI-e. Your best AGP card will be a 7 series nVidia, or 19xx series ATi. They won't be cheap, either. Slow bus speeds are a huge hindrance. Don't even consider a processor upgrade on your old socket, it wouldn't be worth it. Memory, you'd be looking at a 2gig upgrade for todays power hungry applications. This would mean you'd most likely have to ditch your old memory.

    Your call, what's your budget?
