Just install any of a number of start button tools that give you the win7 start button back and it will give you the option of booting directly to desktop. Once you do that you won't even see metro unless you want to.

    On low settings...

I can tell you that my old gaming rig (AMD Phenom II 955 and I had some serious performance issues with BF3. Compare that to someone who had the i7 920 (out at about the same time) and the same exact 5870 video card I had and they got higher frame rates and smoother gameplay. The Frostbite engine is badly CPU limited and with the higher CPU demands of BF4, it's no surprise that people with AMD CPUs notice poor performance more than those with Intel processors.

I re-purposed my old gaming rig as a HTPC... replacing the 5870 with the a GTX 650 Ti Boost. I should install BF4 on that and see how well it performs... I bet it is choppy.

Re: Your Specs, Settings and FPS

I just remembered something. For those running the 'FX" series of AMD processors based on Bulldozer & Piledriver cores and running Windows 7, there are 2 hot fixes you MUST apply in order to get the most out of your CPU.

New Windows 7 Bulldozer Patches Available. | techPowerUp

The scheduler (part of the kernel that decides which core to send work to) in Windows 7 wasn't designed to handle AMDs newer CPU designs. The hot fixes correct it to a degree, but Windows 8 better implements support for the FX series CPUs.

    Huh.

Thanks for that, Wile-E. I was getting Kernel crashes a while back. Maybe this'll prevent it from happening again.

This is where I'm at right now. Plus an HD6870 1Gb. Plus 4Gb if DDR2 RAM. And while I could change any of this, or all of it, DDR2 is getting more expensive because of age/depleting supply and no production. To double my current memory would be over $100 and wouldn't address any other outstanding performance issues related to CPU/Mobo/Gfx.

So I basically need to replace all of the main parts aside from case, psu and disk drives (basically the cheap parts hehe).

Sorry I went back probably while you were posting and fixed that. I meant it is actually playable. The AUTO setting for my graphics changed a bit when I started it after the update. There is a noticeble fps increase and it runs a lot smoother. Again, it still has some hiccups and they became more pronounced when I put textures up to Ultra from High, but I attribute most of the issues to the fact that it is a beta.

I don't know how to bring up an actual fps counter so I can't say for sure what the increases is but I can tell just from playing it that it runs better. Before I was lagging and skipping so much it was unbearable.

Re: Your Specs, Settings and FPS

Implemented Stuttering Fix, and I'm still getting random FPS drops. Besides for those, I'm staying within 30-40 FPS.

Any suggestions on eliminating the dropping?

I'm playing Windowed mode as well as all low settings.

    Windows 7 64 bit
    AMD FX 4100 Quad-Core
    Nvidia GTX560
    8GB DDR3 Ram

Hmmmm... could it be because my display setting is set to 32 bit mode?

This with the new Beta update and I'm pretty solid. There is still lag and stuttering, but I'm playing on Auto settings with mostly high and ultra settings. On the loading screen it says that the performance issues are from PunkBuster. So don't be quick to assume it's our computers that are not performing as they should.
