Server Settings
Well the server documentation is out...
Official: Allows for random connects using the quick join feature. Admins have no abilities (can't kick, ban, enable reserve slots.). You also can only choose between hardcore/normal preset no custom settings at all including ticket counts. Progression is recorded
Ranked: Basically allows you to change a lot features, but you cannot exclude weapons. This will allow admins to use all their powers. Quick join folks will never be dropped into a ranked server.Progression is recorded.
Unranked: Basically you can do anything you want. Any time spent on unranked server doesn't affect your progression.
Brief history of Battlefield 3: Our server started as custom (FF damage, No 3D spot, SL spawn only) and the server stayed well populated for about 3-4 months. Then the random connections stopped happening (DICE gave zero support to custom servers). We transitioned between normal & hardcore few times before settling on what we have now.
Battlefield 4: Battlefield search functions under advanced settings allow people to seek out custom servers. The new battlelog system is robust in finding the server settings you want.
Game Modes: Game modes now have a max player count. The only mode that supports full 64 man is conquest large. Rush, obliteration and conquest domination can only be played on 32 man server.

Re: Server Settings
I don't think they are supposed to sell people on official servers. I read up on Darks chat logs and it seems official servers are for people new to MP for the game to get their feet wet without being thrown into a heavily modified server.

Re: Server Settings
Just an old history lesson about hardcore. Back when TPG was TTP we hosted Cod: MW and we changed it to hardcore. It didn't allow for minimap so we actually after a time went back to normal. It was decided that mini map was essential to teamplay. Keep in mind that hardcore means that many of the commander assets are useless to his troops. Hardcore as it stands right now basically breaks the game.

Supposedly SOME of the settings are server-configurable and you can keep the hardcore moniker, but there's no indication as to which those are in the documentation. I still think we're better off with custom. Normal health/damage model, with hardcore elements mixed in. DICE balances all weapons based on normal mode. They don't put a lot of effort in to balance them on hardcore.
