    BF4 vs BF2142

With the death of 2142 it's time for me to pick up a new game for the PC. Never having played BF4, how does it compare to 2142 as far as squad play, 64 vs 64, ranking up, etc. Are there multiple active servers to choose from? Where is the best place to pick the game up and do you need all of the expansion packs or are they a waste of money?

    Thanks!

    Hey Dave,

It's a completely different beast. Honestly, it isn't as templayer oriented as 2142 or BF2 was, but we do our best to make it as close as it can be. The squads can have 5 players, most of your weapons are unlocks that come from time playing a certain kit. It's essentially your traditional battlefield, but it's catered to the newer generation of gamers. It's still battlefield at heart, especially when played here.

As far as purchasing goes. You can buy it off of origin. The problem is that it's quite expensive to get into at this point. Here's the link https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/b.../game--premium

If you're questioning the price.. It's a little tough to look at, but it's worth it in my opinion.

    Hey Dave,

This is probably the only game this expensive that I've ever thought was worth the price. There's countless servers that play the game but none of them compare to having a full squad of TPGers with you. Like War said, it's really hard to compare it to 2142 because it is different.

It has the same kind of kit customization you had in 2142 - for example you can pick up the tools that make you a long range sniper type of recon - laser designaters, long range weapons, or you can trade your sniper rifle for a silenced close range weapon and build your kit like a close quarters type of recon with C4 and a spawn beacon. Aircraft is a bit different. The very best of the best pilots can make an impact on the game, but the portable anti-air weapons infantry can have are enough to tear through any aircraft if you have a few guys working together to take them down.

The DLC maps can be bough separately or all together with the Battlefield Premium package which has all the DLC packages that will ever come out as well as some extra achievements, skins, unlocks, etc. Like War said, it's catering somewhat to a younger generation of gamers. There's always a new unlock or a weapon skin just around the corner and many people play for unlocks rather than play for the win. I'd say that's one thing TPG does well is that the older and more experienced audience here still has the round victory at the center of its motivation. TPG hosts all of the extra maps and for what it's worth, the DLC maps are actually pretty solid. I would say that they are worth it if you plan to play BF4 for a while.

The unfortunate thing here is that EA has kind of pushed them towards a new battlefield every 2 years business model which really sucks. I loved how BF2 and BF2142 lasted for years before they died off but this new model might mean that when BF5 comes out, there will be significantly less players playing it.

    Re: BF4 vs BF2142

BF4 is what BF3 was basically supposed to be, from a gameplay perspective, but the technical rollout of BF4 was a complete disaster. They have patched the netcode to some extent and have instituted testing servers but don' t know the extent of what else they are going to do with it. With the announcement that DICE got the contract to build the next Star Wars Battlefront, it doesn't sound like BF5 is coming out any time soon and the BF Hardline played like a counterstrike Mod for BF4 (except the release costs another $60). Is there another purported "Battlefield killer" game on the horizon that I don't know about?

Don't buy directly off Origin unless you have to.

Amazon.com: Battlefield 4 [Online Game Code]: Video Games

Less than $20, then if you do end up buying Premium, it's still cheaper than Origin's "sale" price of $84.98 for both.

Premium is $39.99 right now, it's gone as low as $30 in the past.

There is a commander unlike in BF3. The position is nowhere near as powerful as in 2142 and earlier, but it's not bad. I believe you can even do stuff with a tablet, so if you're a commander, you can afford to take bathroom breaks. Not sure if that supports voice comms for the tablet...that could get awkward.
-"Commander, we need a supply drop on Bravo."
-"Give me a sec, currently dropping nerve gas over the lake."
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
