Alright, so this is a thing:
BF4 PC Issues reprod - Forums - Battlelog / Battlefield 4
There seems to be a memory leak issue with BF4 where it'll start eating up more and more memory as your session goes on. This would explain why my framerate tanks towards the end of a 2 hour session. One of the solutions people have used is to lower Texture Quality and Filtering from Ultra to High and they report longer stability.
I'm going through the rest of the 12 page thread to see what else I can dig up.
Edit: Here's what I've learned.
- The issues seem to affect AMD hardware disproportionately. That, or only people with AMD setups are caring to report their issues.
- DirectX causes CPU spiking which is worse for some people than others (I've seen people drop from 80 fps to 20. I've never had that, but it seems to happen)
- Mantle hides a lot of the CPU spiking, but introduces an even worse memory leak that kicks in at around 3 rounds with 8GB of RAM
- Battlescreen interferes with the game if run on the same system
- Battlelog itself can cause some interference. Different browsers report different levels of interference
- Finally, DICE LA can now reproduce the issue, so supposedly they're working on a solution.
