Re: Fly away
I had the same question when I started 2142. Here's the solution: PRACTICE.
You have to use the mouse and keyboard to be efficient. It takes practice but there is not much that I can't do with both the transport and the gunship using the m/k.
When the server was waiting for 8 players to start I would practice my skills and eventually it was tricks.
Have fun.

Re: Fly away
I play with a game pad (Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual power, sadly no longer mfg), I like the feel and the button placement. I've tried flying with a joystick, but it interferes with the game pad, so until I change my style and play off the m/k, flying is relagated to the final exterity. I can get around, but landing is always dicey, and I'd just as soon not take any team mates to hell with me.

Re: Fly away
The short answer is "Yes". The longer version....I played a lot of Halo PC and I used the same Thrustmaster controler. I started out on the keyboard and mouse, but I would lose my place on the k/b, die and get frustrated. I found the above mentioned game pad and have been happy ever since. It has 12 buttons and a hat or D pad. My fingers fall naturally on the buttons, two of which are on the grips; it's a little difficult to describe.
I've heard the arguments about accuracy and so forth, and I'm not going to take issue with them. This setup works for me, allow me to be reasonably compotent, and I enjoy the game (2142).
Another factor; I'll be 43 this August, I grew up playing games with a joystick. I have in fact boasted ( in hyperbole of course) that if a something has a joystick I can drive it, fly it or play it. Maybe I'm just hard wired that way.
However, as mention in my first post, this game pad in no longer made. I've managed to find a few on ebay, but that is not going to last I'm afraid. So I have a second 2142 profile I'm trying to train myself to play without the game pad.
