I'm not sure what the case is with your service provider, but generally speaking cable modems are pretty standard, but unless yours is more than five or six years old, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Usually you can only get a compatible modem from the ISP, and they tend to be expensive anyways, but you can always check with them to see whether they'll give you a newer one for free.

There are insutructions on updating the firmware on the manufacturers website as well. If you update the firmware, enable mac filtering and still have lag problems try a gaming router. Wireless is nice but if you leave it default out of the box anyone within range can use it.
Thanks Phyrelight. I have disable the wireless so hopefully my neighbors aren't getting free internet access from me. I'm going to check tonight and see if there are any firmware updates for my router.
For the record, I found that router Ironstomach recommended at Circuit City's website for $99. Cheaper than newegg. (Crazy!) Now all I have to do is convince my wife we need one.

Typically Cable modems all have the same functionality. They are not necessarily all created equal though. Here is a link to some reviews for hardware.

    http://www.speedguide.net/broadband.php

As you will see from the reviews Zoom isn't ranked the "highest" but depending on your model the score may be worth the price.

    Hope it helps!

That's true if everyone is on Coax, but that's pretty rare in most urban/suburban areas. Most cable companies switched to fiber optic years ago. Almost all DSL packages are much, much slower than cable in most of the USA.

I agree. I live in the suburbs and there are maybe 20 people are my cable modem loop. I get no drop in signal even during prime time. If I lived in a metropolitan area in a condo or apartment where there are 100's of people sharing a cable modem loop I would recommend DSL in that situation.

I'm sure it is with the lower end routers, but I have not been able to rationalize out why if both platforms are using 802.11 as the standard, why it seems to be platform specific as to why PCs get sent for a loop and the Macs keep moving.

well using aircrack, a brute force in to WEP/WPA protected networks also works on unprotected networks, and allows you to use more bandwidth then other regular at a Wi-Fi hotspot just have to set the prioty thing in the GUI (just as a note to use aircrack on protected networks you need a program like Airodump to retreive packets)

I've never seriously delved in to THOSE programs. Others, sure. But I guess I'll start running more..... "diagnostics" .... when it happens again. Thanks for that heads up.
