Hunting Hackers

Last night on Oman we again had a little punk bitch hacker pulling the typical bullshit. My squad and I figured out where the little prick was hiding and then as a unit committed to hunting him down. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful as the asshat suicided before we could get his tag. Kudos to my squadmates last night.

That being said, after speaking to the Admin in game last night I realized that I was not providing the best info I could to help the Admin id the hacker. IF POSSIBLE - are there some tips the Admins could give us regular Joe's on the type of intell which will best help them id hackers or other littlepunks.

And agian thanks to the Admin helping last night, I don't think we id'ed the punk but we damn sure ran him off the server!!

Lists of player names are always useful - no matter what kind of hack. To get a list simply press <Tab> and then take a screencap.

It's best to practice the keystroke sequence beforehand. Otherwise in the heat of a hack chase there is a chance of getting nervous and fumbling. Then there is no screenshot and all that remains is a . . . complaint.

Good thread Ira and good suggestion ebaconjr, what if we could get the screen shot while looking up at the cars falling would that give a better idea of the hack that is occuring? or open the map? or wait the map disappears when you hit tab huh

    Re: Hunting Hackers

We get no information from falling cars, to some it looks pretty but that's it. The information we are able to use is the players names.

To add to the instructions Ebaconjr left, hold tab and hit PrtSc to take a screen shot. Some times you need to right click the mouse and them move it to the player list rather then viewing the squads. That file will be saved in you documents folder under BF2 and then you can upload it to a place like www.photobucket.com and paste the link. We can take it and process the infomration from there.

Other useful things would be to mention what team you believe the hacker is on. (US vs MEC) That in its self if your correct, will narrow it down to a max of 30 players vs the full 60.

    Re: Hunting Hackers

Ok thanks for the tips. I regularly take screenshots of tk'ers, so i can do that. One question - can you take a screenshot of the command screen, I'm sure I'm not asking that question right - the gray screen that comes up when you hit the tilde(~). If I would have been quick about it we could have got the info on a claymore kill the hacker had of a squadmate immediately before his suicide. Also is there a way to scroll up in the tilde (~) screen?

One last question, where would you like to see the screenshots posted?

The tilde screen is typically called the console. I do not know if screencaps capture it or not - I would have to test.

The screencaps can be pasted here in the BF2 forum. Admins can then move them into their business forum.

Knowing what side he is one definitely helps. I also believe, someone tell me if I am wrong, but the cars that are dropping will tell you what side he is one. HMMV's=American, etc. Definitely do your best to try and get his name. Also the person will be very near the drop, so look for someone that is pretty motionless and either looking up or looking down. I have also read that you "may" be able to hear "vehicle in your area" coming from the offender. Just some tips. Let the group know if any of this bears any fruit...

I believe you can SS the console. The offender does not have to be close the the area but most of the time they are. Chosen is correct that they are usually not moving while doing this as well.
