well, the xbox itself should be fine on either side, no overheating - just as long as it can "breathe", so to say, easily and you dont have 8 wool blankets around it... or give it its own pair of uggs.
My [brother's] has been fine, and its laying flat. I mean, ive played for 4+ hours some days and that thing has been a trooper through and through.

When I was on holidays I was playing if for 12 hours straight lying down and it was fine. I would rather get two flashing lights because of it over-heating then have a scratched disc and have to pay for the game again. My xbox is under warranty for another 30 months yay!
This is exactly why I have it lying down, I did it to my NBA game and I took it to the game store and he said that after about half an hour of buffing I was very lucky to have saved the game, and the thing is you barely have to even move the xbox when it is standing up to scratch the disc.

UPDATE:
Xbox started crashing again, wasn't Red Ringing though.
Xbox Red Ring'd.
Opened up the Xbox and undid what I had put in there, because I decided it probably hadn't helped at all.
Towel Tricked it.
Just played +4 hours of L4D with Dan (Left4Legend on here), haven't had any problems.
Damn you youtube! You tell me the towel trick doesn't work, then give me stupid advice about what to do with my xbox, when in the end the towel trick was the ONLY thing that worked."This is why we have guns!"
