Or perhaps physically remove the soundcard and try using the onboard sound. See if things improve that way.

I would assume it would say something related to sound, but I didn't see anything.
Don't be surprised if you don't have something like that. It was just a suggestion. Maybe go ahead and remove your PCI card as already suggested. Maybe that will at least isolate if it is a sound card problem or not.

Just a thought, can you check your fan to make sure it is spinning freely and is free of dust? L4D seems to make PCs run kind of hot. Maybe double check your fan settings to make sure it is configured properly. Overheating will make a PC lock up.

    fans are spinning freely.

I tried running HL2 to see if it was a source problem, but I played about 15 minutes of it with no freeze happening, so it so far seems to be isolated to both Portal and L4D2. Both games I can easily replicate any time I want, and it freezes at pretty much the same spot(s) each time

Tried at least reinstalling Portal (easier to do since I'm running DSL and I have orange box on disc) to see if it was a problem with the install, but still get the freeze at the exact same spot

I'm seriously at a loss here, and about to give up, as I've tried everything in this thread, and still no dice, starting to feel like these games were a waste of $$

I am not sure what else to tell you. Maybe try the Steam forums? Maybe someone else has an answer for you. Sorry we couldn't get you fixed up.

Just a thought....this could be hardware related. Do you have access to another video card you could try, just to make sure that there is nothing wrong with your existing one?

If there is a memory problem with the card, it is possible that you could play certain games just fine, but others would have a problem.

At the very least, pull the video card and blow out the slot and clean the edges of the card with some alcohol.

hmm, I'll give this a try probably tomorrow, fairly busy today. I don't really have access to another video card (at least, one that could play L4D2) without having a friend bring over their PC, but I could at the very least give it a cleaning in the next day or so

just as a suggestion when i used to get left 4 dead feezes i used to run the game in windowed mode(no borders) which allowed me to acces desktop and crl-alt-del out of the crash instead of hard shutdowns.
i know i doesnt solve the problem but make it easier to work around.
