I had this exact problem before does it on some servers and not on others, i believe forwarding all the bf2 ports on my router fixed it for me.
Its a firewall/router problem though, make sure all the ports are forwarded

Re: Need help with 'Lost Connection'
When i forwarded the ports on my router I just added a instance for each and combined those that are close (like 27900udp/tcp and 29900 udp into 27900-29900 udp/tcp)

Re: Need help with 'Lost Connection'
From all the posts I have been reading here and from what Big Dog just posted a few posts back it sounds like it is their router on the server that is the problem. And he is probably right if the cpu on the router is being over loaded. We had the same problem with one of our Cisco's doing vlans for 40 clients.
There is nothing you need to config on your home router or xp to run BF2. When you install the program it adds it to your safe list, also asks you if you wish to allow traffic for bf2.exe when playing. As long as you responded yes you are ok.
I run 4 different setups at my house ranging from Intel P4, Core Duo, AMD X2 to Opteron. All experience the same issue. It's definitely not hardware related.
This is either a ISP problem, hosting problem, or Router on the hosting end.
What router are you all using?
