Missing backgrounds and sometimes starburst effect

Okay so this problem has been going on for a while now, so heres to scenario(s):

Play for about 10-15 minutes then the graphics go haywire. Sometimes it will start off with the textures/background going missing as in the picture. I found that going back to the desktop by "alt-tab" route would fix this problem temporarily, but would eventually come back. If it becomes worse, usually when the graphics card seems to be overworked even more so, I would get a starburst effect where I would see lines coming from the center of the monitor with everything grayed out and just the lines like im going down a tunnel or something.

I have had this problem before updating drivers/reformatting and installing windows 64, uninstalling and reinstalling the game/taking apart the computer piece by piece and airing it out, taking out components and running them separately, etc. I do some graphic work on this comp and lately it seems some of my rendering in 3DS as well as Photoshop CS4 do the same thing, but mainly L4D2. I played the SC2 beta and had no problems during that.

    My system:
    Intel Core2Duo E6750 2.66GHz
    ASUS P5K-E WIFI/AP
    5120 MBytes of DDR2 Ram
    Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS (617MB)

My first reaction is that your PC may be overheating, or your PSU may be having problems. Can you pop the side off and point a fan at the insides and see if that helps?

I had actually thought about that too. I took the sides off (both) then ran the same game under the same type of situations and it seemed fine.

As far as the PSU, it hasn't had any hiccups and its a 750 watt thermaltake modular PSU. Thanks for the reply though....

    Unhappy

Just for kicks, I turned up all the fans in my case, took off all the sides, decreased the quality to low on L4D2, tuned it down to one core, shut off all other programs, decreased it to 1440x900 and this is what I got after a few minutes of game play.

Hmmm...just for grins, try going into your CFG folder and delete the file called VIDEO.TXT, and let it recreate itself.

But, since you said you are having the same issues with other graphics programs, I really don't think it is the game.

Since you have reformatted and the problem persists, I am inclined to believe your video card may be on the way out.

Have you got another video card you can try?

Mmm, no I do not. I was thinking it HAD to be the card because I can render fine and the CPU does not have any real problems. The vid card is the only option...*sigh*

Well, I didn't want to purchase another vid card because this one is a PCI Express 1.0. If I wanted to upgrade it would have to be a 2.0 and sadly that means new mobo. If I get a new mobo then I would want to upgrade cpu and with the mobo as well I would have to go with new ram too. In essence...if my vid card really is the problem...the only solution is a major overhall...

Well, you could check at places like Amazon, sometimes they will have refurbished or inexpensive replacements. It might get you by until you can replace your whole rig.
