Are you running any background programs like a Torrent, limewire, or anything else?

Do you have a wireless router? If you do then your neighbors are probably grabbin their internet from you for free. This will kill your ping.

If this is the case then you need to encrypt your wireless network and you'll be fine.

Sounds like you need to go see a "Ping" doctor :-O

All seriousness, what does your traceroute look like? Need more details also who is the provider? Mine at Comcast has been mucking with their routing lately where I was going to New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and then to Texas...way too many hops. Its fixed now but you can figure all that out with a simple trace. You can obfuscate the first part of it if you want but really need that info on hops and route to answer that question or at least rule out that it's a net problem.

    Re: Ping?

I would speculate that it is a background process on his machine rather than a routing problem with isp. The jumping around is the reason why.

    room\house mates on shared connection

    Torrents?

Something else trying to connect behind the scenes?

My TraceRT is double what it was only 7 days ago. I ran a couple Baselines on 4.2.2.2 and my isp is still just as snappy.
