For me the nightstick isn't very good for hordes. It does have a nice and quick swing rate, but I'm just not getting these "mow through hordes" visions like others do.
Often if the zombie I swing at is not directly in front of me, it's like they ninja right around the police baton. Basically it doesn't have the good range that other weapons have. It's even worse if you're getting a little lag- I tried using it in Versus once, and it was very ineffective.
My favorite weapon is the Cricket Bat. It's range isn't as good as maybe the fire axe or another weapon, but it goes through hordes nicely and has a good sound. Sure it's a reskin of the baseball bat, but to me the idea is more original.

I don't like it because the sound is somewhat muted and in the chaos of a serious horde event, it can be difficult to immediately tell what you scored hits on since you don't have the obvious visual of limbs/heads fliying off as any of the edged weapons or even the cricket or baseball bats. At least the frying pan and guitar make very distinctive sounds that are difficult to miss, but the baton does none of that.

The range of a melee weapon is extremely important. When you're dealing with the horde, you want every last inch of range to be effective since you already have a narrow window of opportunity to hit rushing enemies. Missing by an inch on a rushing infected or SI will usually mean you're getting hit.
