My roommate lived with Tony Moore at the time the comics were originally written. Tony said it was loosely based on the movie originally released in the UK, 1 year before it came to the US, not thinking that the movie would ever make it to the US and hit big.

My roommate sadly just sold the lot of #1-5 on eBay that I never got the chance to read.

This series looks absolutely epic.
