    No 'new' school boss was terribly difficult since patterns were the name of the game and AI, now, is very poor.
    See what I did there? I've yet to see a game that didn't have shitty AI and used patterns.

    Hell just getting to the end boss was hard back in the day with no saving, impossible to remember passwords, and everything in the game dealing way too much damage.

    I challenge any of these young guys to go and beat one of the games I listed in one night (excluding Wolf3D) which seems to be the normal amount of time it takes to beat one of todays games.

    Man, I completely forgot about my old-school favorites:

    YouTube - Castlevania last boss + ending

    Plus the Grim Reaper was always ridiculously difficult in all the old school Castlevanias.

    Man, those were some seriously tough games back then. 4 hits at the later levels and you were toast. None of that newfangled business where you can level up the character so much that all the enemies pale in comparison to your power.

    To address Kagato's point, even though all the games are based around recognizing a pattern and exploiting it to win, a lot of what can make a game difficult is player execution. Even if I know what needs to be done and when it needs to be done, that's no guarantee that I will be able to successfully perform the actions in the time frame allotted. This is pretty much what made a lot of the old school games challenging. A lot of the games I find fun require fast reflexes and clean execution, like Viewtiful Joe or Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

    It's not even that they were more difficult, just that you had to replay the entire damn campaign again - which lets face it, is NOT fun.

    Also, it's so hard to make a boss really difficult without it just being over the top cheap about it.
