Re: RETREAT!!!!
Well, fighting to the death is all well and good, but I'm thinking of that rather valuable commodity known as 'time'. In this case, the time it takes to respawn yourself, then wait for more heavy equipment to respawn, then deploy said equipment to where it will actually be useful.
by withdrawing my armor, I saved my squad (and hence, my team) probably upwards of a minute of wasted time by immediately having my main gun available for heavy fire support, rather than having to bring another out of stores from the tank park.

Re: RETREAT!!!!
well of course if you can make your way out of a situation without being killed that more effective than simply holding still and dieing, but i have never once been sitting at a silo or flag and ordered a retreat.
We fight and fight and come back for more until I either hear, or decide that regrouping at another spawn in a good idea, or are completely beaten off a point and have no other choice.

Re: RETREAT!!!!
I think like 1/3 of the squad was between respawns when the order was given to regroup. The others that were still alive were the ones I wanted to give a chance to bug out.
Besides, it made me feel all heroic, and I got to watch lots of enemy bodies go pinwheeling through the air after a shot from my main gun. That always gives me a tingly feeling in my tummy, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class.

Re: RETREAT!!!!
You never retreat. That is something the Army does, heck they even wrote a catchy little song about it:
Sung as a cadence
Listen to the pitter patter of the tiny feet,
It sounds like the Army in a full retreat.
They’re moving on,
They'll soon be gone.

You know, after thinking about this I've noticed that of course most of us tend to pick the option for heavy armour on our kits, yet you'd think that we would be able to take off the heavy armour if the option was needed (as in an, erm, fighting withdrawl..) I don't know about you all but if I'm going to run for my life then I'd unclip a few fasteners and drop a few armour plates to be able to run faster... be quite a handy change if they were ever actually going to put out another patch

Re: RETREAT!!!!
i was just about to suggest PR...
but along that same line, the 1.4 smoke grenades rock. in conjunction with a radar and a support i think that would work.
I'd imagine that one do a sort of...leap frogging technique with a well disciplined squad....but the speed of the game can cause problems here.
As for withdrawing, it has tended to happen itself upon me when some enemy bastards have sneaked past our defensive line...causing all sorts of problems in the back.
or if something unhandleable comes up...
