"You were Japped by the Hi-Hats!"
    "Last Checkpoint/Restart Level/Quit"

Sometimes it stops you when you make a bad decision (or don't decide at all, in my example) and sometimes, not at all.

"You are now an enemy of Caesar"
    *five seconds later*
Mr. House : Go to Caesar's fort.
    Me : *Facepalm*

You might wanna look behind you.

That's what I liked about Deus Ex; your decisions impacted your game way later Ie: The fate of your brother, Paul. So if you REALLY wanted to go all that way back, then thats up to you but most people wouldn't have the patience.

I loved this about Heavy Rain - there were several times you had to make a decision you REALLY didn't want to make, and it was truly gutwrenching. One of the best examples was when I'd finished the final challenge set by the killer to determine how many clues I'd get towards my son's whereabouts.
Unfortunately, I'd screwed up one of the earlier challenges, which meant I had a few of the letters of the address missing. This meant that with only enough time to visit one of the locations before time ran out, I had to GUESS the location from three options.

I swear, I have never had to make such a hard decision in my gaming life. Knowing that I was in the endgame, and the choice I made was ultimately going to decide whether everything I'd done up to then (and without giving anything away, I'd had to do some seriously unpleasant stuff) was all for nothing? That was a damn hard decision.
