My biggest gripe about this whole situation is that obviously someone like Geohot simply can't afford litigation against him. That in itself I just feel like is completely unjustified [Edit: And by unjustified I mean by this; Sony could know damn well they're wrong (I'm not saying they are or aren't.), but they could just continue on with litigation and bankrupt whoever they want, and therefore "win" the case, because the individual simply can't afford such a lawsuit]. Sony would just keep delaying and making more motions until the guy is basically bankrupt.

How is an individual suppose to reasonable protect themselves against such litigation? Even if they're in the right, the amount of money they'd wind up in debt just to prove a "not guilty" verdict will bankrupt the individual anyway. It's absurd.

just because the Patriot act makes it legal to wiretap me
ONLY way they can wiretap you without court approval is if you're calling a phone to another country (AND they must prove it was a suspected threat to national security). Otherwise the Law Enforcement entity in question must apply for a permit from either a state/federal court of the FISC.

So as long as you're not dialing outside the country, feel free in knowing no one can wire tap you without the approval of a judge

    this^

honestly i wouldnt be surprised if this case cost sony more money than it would have to just let hotz do his thing. id be willing to bet that whats pissing everyone off isnt the fact that sony is defending themselves, but their overzealous campaign to troll hotz and the like, coupled with the common dislike people have for modern corporations cause theyre dicks to everyone, which kind of magnifies the reaction and blowing it a bit out of proportion

TP, as much as I respect that Sony had a right to defend themselves, the majority of your defence of them amounts to Sony saying:

"Fuck you, you're a consumer and don't deserve shit--no matter what you paid for."

And that just doesn't sit with me. There've just been too many things revealed by this saga that have me worried about consumer rights--from EULAs (a document that can be changed AFTER funds have been exchanged) being a base of litigation to arbitrary restrictions on what you can use your hardware for (especially as there's nothing on the box about it).

I just plain don't like where we're going...
