I find that the teamwork is usually good enough without using voice, as long as everyone on the team is paying attention and knows how to play the game. But I suppose people that play with a mic would find if annoying with teammates that don't.

My experience with having voice enabled in other games is that there's always some kid yelling in my ear or playing annoying music.
I personally do not care if my teammate has a mic unless it's a very super serious game (which I rarely play), as long as you are able to hear game chat, and are in general aware of your surroundings, etc.

However, pubs do care. You are getting kicked because you don't have a mic, more than likely. It's probably moreso a problem on the Xbox 360, but I guarantee it is one of the driving forces behind you getting kicked. If you just have one and plug it in without saying much, maybe then you won't get kicked as much. It definitely depends on the players you are playing with, but I myself definitely don't mind if someone has a mic. It's public players, and people who want to make sure you can hear them. Yes, often they do just want you to hear them screaming, shouting abuse, playing music, etc. But it's a reason why you might be getting kicked.

Honestly - as long as it's plugged in, you can get away with it in most pub games.

But yeah, people usually auto-kick no mic'ers on the xbox. Also people have VERY little patience on L4D. If you show that you're even a little new, a lot of people will kick you. It's extremely unfortunate.

Rejoin the game and get revenge by killing yourself or the team.

That would be tempting, but after being kicked it seems you are automatically banned for a while.

I've bought Killing Floor and will try to get into that instead. I'll probably play the occasional L4D campaign, but not bother with versus on pubs.
