Yeah, the Steam version seems to have a problem if you're running the Steam overlay AND Xfire at the same time. I just disabled Steam overlay and leave Xfire happily running using the procedure that chosen posted. If one or the other is running it's fine for me.

Sigh...I just started getting this, I don't have the steam version(though I run it through steam, easier that way), and Xfire is never on. Real irritating that I gotta restart steam every time I wanna play BF2. Guess I gotta stop using steam to play it.

This was the solution a clanmate used to fix the same issue and he's not using steam.
