Mic problems in BF2 only
I have never been able to get my mic to work in BF2. My only problem is with BF2, so I am posting this here rather than in the hardware forum. I ran the audio setup program and it works fine there but not in the game. Never has. I tried switching from software to hardware audio and changing the levels, etc. but nothing works. The mic also works in every other audio program I have used it with (audacity, video/teleconferencing, etc.). The mic is on a Medusa Speedlink 5.1 headset and is plugged into the mic input on a Creative Audigy 2 sound card.
Anyone have any special tricks or tips?

Re: Mic problems in BF2 only
Two suggestions as I don't know what exactly you've tried.
If you have very little mic reception, try the microphone boost button that you can access with the speaker icon. I think you double-click on the speaker icon and find that check-box (associated with a "mic in" parameter). I think it might also be under some advanced tab/section once the speaker screen shows.
If you have no mic reception, you can see if there is another set of sound options (again from the speaker icon). In my case, I had a new MB and the default options would have a mic field, but that just would not work. I eventually found there was another drop-down box that let me choose from another section that also had a mic field. This one was set to mute, so once I unmuted it, life was good again.
Good luck. Let me know if you can't find what I am referring to and I'll try to give exact steps.

Re: Mic problems in BF2 only
Not uncommon in BF2, more so for USB mics but also other ones too.
Couple of things to try:
1: Right click your speaker icon and go to "adjust audio properties". In the Audio tab, make sure the Audigy is chosen as the default item for Sound Playback and Sound Recording. Some software will see the Audigy no matter what, some won't. BF2 might be in the won't category.
2. I've heard lowering your acceleration can help too. Go to Start/Run type in dxdiag, then enter. You computer will grind away for a little while (depending on specs), and finally give you a screen containing all your hardware information. On the sound tab slide the acceleration back to "standard acceleration", it's probably on "full acceleration". Or vice versa if it's been on standard the whole time your mic hasn't worked, try it on full. In fact I should try this, after toasting my X-Fi, and still shopping for a new soundcard I've been using the new Intel onboard sound, and it's been flaky with BF2 VOIP.
3. Alt tab out after a game starts and make sure BF2 didn't mute your microphone. This happens with USB mics quite often for some unknown reason. You might have to do this every time you play, or a map loads, I forget how frequently it needs to be done.

Re: Mic problems in BF2 only
I had similiar issues to you. I finally found the solution to my issue.
When I plugged in my headset (Razer Gaming) my squad would yell at me because the sound was horrible and hurted their ears. I had a new gaming sound card and the issue was still present. I went through all the setting ingame and in control panel. What fnally made mine work, was turn on both mic boosts in game and out of game. It put the levels where it needed to be and not as bad as it used to be.
Hope you fix the problem, not having a mic sucks.
