If all else fails just Reinstall or Repatch and don't install any mods such as PR or AIX and you should be good to go forever.

I run both BF2vanilla & PR without any problems whatsoever :P

ditto. I found though that I get handshaking errors most often when I double click the BF2 Shortcut and then try and do something else right before the splash screen hits. Like quickly x out of a Xfire conversation or something.
