    So I purchased BF2 Today

And I don't know if I like it. It WOULD be cool if it wasn't so effing complicated. The big thing that is trying my patience is flying. How in the HELL do you fly anything? I take off, then the little horizon bar, that I imagine should stay well, horizontal, is like vertical. I try to move the arrow key or the mouse to straighten it out, and boom dead. I land on the roof or it takes so much room to straighten out that I get that annoying guy telling me to "Get back in the game soldier" or whatever the hell and then I blow up. Try again, same thing over and over. I have been trying to play this game for about 2 hours now and frankly I am pretty pissed off. I just cannot get the thing to level off. What the hell is the trick to flying anything?

So, flying is out. I guess that leaves just running around shooting people. Oh, wait, you can't do that until you get up to where the battle is and you can't get there unless you can fly. So, I start hoofing it. About 3 or 4 minutes later I get to the front line. And BOOM, dead again because evidently shooting someone point blank in the face with a sniper rifle doesn't kill them. I just don't get it. I have read the manual which was frankly no help because it doesn't really tell you all that much. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to get started playing this thing?

    Thanks.
    Bueller (very frustrated)

Congrats Bueller. 1st dont use your mouse. I use the same keys you move your guy around with exception of using THE ARROW KEYS TO DIRECT THE AIRCRAFT.

what were you trying to fly? imo, flying is one of hte later things to learn. i fly planes with a flightstick and choppers with kb/mouse...flying a plane with kb/mouse can prove right difficult ops: :P

i would say to hoof it at first...that way you get to learn the map up close and personal, and then once you begin to learn to the map layouts and such, then 'graduate' to vehicles...probably starting with the little jeeps/humvees, then the armor/anti-aircraft. then of course, aircraft :P i personally prefer the choppers, probably because i learned those first due to not having a flightstick at first...plus theyre more versatile, as they are more manueverable and there are two types, 'attack' and 'transport'. attack choppers are two seaters and carry a pretty lethal arsenal; transport choppers are buses in the sky.

bf2, while looking 'real' has more of an 'arcade' attribute...thus the sniper shot to the face...ive had many a frustration from being crouch/prone and 'zoomed' putting a whole clip in a guy, only for him to turn around and squeeze off a short burst or two, from the hip, with a less accurate gun and take me out...so if youre looking for all out realism... <shrug> ...on the other hand, that arcade-ism is part of hte appeal, knowing that you wont instantly die every time you get pegged :P

as far as worrying about getting down into the heat of the battle...you can completely avoid battles and succeed in the round, just by capping/defending flags, supporting the other troops, without even shooting one shot...thats part of hte beauty of bf2...its such a versatile game...theres so many different things you can do to affect the outcome of a game  you can provide airsupport, or groundpound the whole map, be a flag capping madman or defend a choke point or key flag or even take out enemy assets, or you can go commander and tell all the troops where to go.

probably the best way to learn is joining a squad (at the class/spawn point select menu..."enter" and "caps lock" i think are defaults and should get you that map/menu). and in the same class/spawn screen, youre not usually limited to one spawn point...you can spawn at any of your team's flags, which would also have a white, raised looking dot...just click on it...the one with the bigger circle around it is where youre going to spawn. also, when you in a squad, you squad leader can be a mobile spawn point...jsut look for the raised green dot and select it. anyhoo, as i started, the best way to learn the ropes is probably by joining a squad, that way you can just group together with them and see who/what/when/where/how they do things :gun:

and of course remember, all new games will have a learning curve and their own intricacies, so hang in there :P

wow that was more writing than anticipated, sry ops: :P

Listen to nmeboat, he's one of the best in the game. Also bear in mind, the TTP server is one of the most competitive servers I've been on, so dont get discouraged if you have a score of like 5 with 2 kills and 30 deaths...you'll get better the more you learn each map. Heck, I had 2 kills and 15 deaths earlier today, so it happens. It'll take a solid month to effectively learn everything if you are of average ability. Then alot more months to really get good. Thats one of the more impressive things about the game, it takes a good while to become worth a damn. Unless your twelve, and running the latest MachV from Falcon-NW that mommy and daddy bought for you. :gun:

Stick with it, you'll be glad you did. Remember, its not the game that's fun, but rather the people you play with that make it worth while.

    Good hunting,

Well I just wasted another hour or so on single player, just trying to get used to it all. I have the ground infantry part down, that's easy. Tanks, Hummers and the like are no problem now either. I actually managed to fly around without crashing right away in the plane, but the chopper still kicks my ass. Anyway, I am learning. I might get really brave and jump into the TTP server later this week once I build my confidence up some more. I can imagine the game is a lot more fun when you are not playing with computer bots that like to drive your tank into a wall so you can get shot in the ass by the enemy tank and then like 1 second before your tank explodes they yell "Get Out!" Yeah, thanks for the info Mario Andretti, way to fucking drive. Anyway, I'm starting to get the hang of it. The graphics aren't nearly as good as CS Source, but it has its advantages as well. I like the interactive type screen, showing the little flags and meters to the team mate or enemy, thats pretty cool. And it is pretty fun being a medic and paddling someone to death hahaha. Anywho, I'm off to bed, see y'all on the battlefield soon!!
