    Re: Squad Leader suggestions

There are two weaknesses I have which prevent me from being an effective squad leader, don't do these things:

    1. Don't to be too aggressive. I always tend to want to be in the action, but as a squad lead, you want to be on the perimeter so the artillery strikes misses you, the infantry don't notice you, the helicopters avoid you and you stay alive so you have constant reinforcements.

    2. You can't be nice. Many times I'll be far to lenient to the squad mates and let a few of them get away with not following orders. But I have been trying to improve on this lately when I play and I'll actually raise my voice or call someone out for not playing their role.

One other thing that is good to do is to not flag tag. It is fine to take flags, but if it is costing you a lot of tickets to capture a flag, and then you lose the one you previously capture, it was a pointless battle. Sometimes you have to defend while the other squads move out and capture flags. Defending is a lot easier than attacking so you can not only keep a flag but get a few kills towards the ticket count. Remember, in a 64 player server, a team averages somewhere from half to two thirds of ticket loss from deaths.

    Dave,

The above posts are great advice from some very experienced regs. If you are bored and want to do some reading, below are a few links for your learning enjoyment. There are a lot of links on effective squad leading in the forum.

In my opinion, the best way to learn how to squad lead is to join squads with an established regular. Hell, maybe you can have the chance to squad up with 11Bravo (i never play bf2 anymore) Pathfinder. As it has been said, each have their own styles. Find one that works for you. More important than anything else is to make sure your squad follows your orders and the commanders ultimate orders. I'll make sure I join your squad when you are on and lend your squad support.

    I hear you Primer!!

I also used to give lessons on squad leading back in the day when the server wasn't so hostile a place to be. Seems to me that all of those players got tougher on the server and it's hard to just sit back in a squad and help someone learn how to be an effective SL anymore. Back then, I used to cycle out and let someone else SL. Then I would give them directions on how to squad lead, where to attack and how, where and when to defend. I have helped many a good player on the TTP BF2 server get comfortable with being a SL.

I'll make y'all a deal, I'll come back over and share what I have learned, but sometime y'all need to come back me up on the PR server and help me show some of these new guys, how the trusted few can actually accomplish a lot when working in unison.

Bravo, come join us and I'll join you in PR. But if it does what it did last time and I start getting PB errors constantly, I'm uninstalling it.

    Re: Squad Leader suggestions

Well, there's already volumes said, so my advice is simple:

#1 Relax - don't be nervous or shy. Talk slowly & calmly, and don't be rude with your squadmates. You're squad leader for 1round, a reputation as a jerk can last a lifetime.
#2 Be Clear - tell your guys what your next objective is/what your goal is. Thank them when those goals are met.
#3 HAVE FUN - The best squad leaders can make the game seem much more real, and much more casual at the same time. If you're not enjoying it, your mates probably won't as well. Getting pissed off a lot if easily detectable in your voice... and let's face it... people tend to avoid spending time with pissed off people
#4 Advertise! - Create your own unique squad name. Several of us use a signature name for our squads so that people know what they are getting into. If quality players see you took the time to create a unique squad name rather than just another "Bravo" squad, they may just join you to see what you're all about.

    Re: Squad Leader suggestions

    11Bravo,

You keep talking like you own the joint or help start all of this. There are alot of good, no great, players that helped start this server that no longer play here. If GMG came back today and typed some advice for SL'ing, I'd partake in it. Heck even the ones that wrote a response to this question are current players I look up to. Man, the only way I know you is by my gunsights. I've killed you alot and never looked up to you. It's one thing to respond on the forums of game you've haven't played in a year and a half, it's another to keep saying, "I could come back" or "I just might come back" and dish out advice like it's nothing. If you're not in it sometimes the game passes you by and by your own admission, it looks like it has. If you come back and supposedly "grace us with your presence" squad up with the regs and learn something. Otherwise leave the advice giving to the regs.

Listen to me when I say clearly come back and prove me wrong on the battlefield. If you do I'll take everything back and publically apologize on the forums about how wrong I was. Otherwise, right now you're only sounding like an old man merely talking about how good you use to be and that has no validation. Your actions speak so loud I can barely hear what you are saying.

Please come back and show us the brilliance you once had and add something to the community. Heck I might learn something from you. This post is simply a shot across your bow to get your attention. You are important, but if I don't know you how is Davecraze gonna know who you are?

    Re: Squad Leader suggestions

With respect, allow me to interject for a second...

Several years ago now (man it seems like a lifetime), people like ***Commander***, myself and yes, 11BravoPathfinder started the BF2 server on the road it is today. If Bravo sounds like he helped start all this, well... he did. Guys like Bravo and ***Commander*** are the reason BF2 stands today in a sea of hopelessly inadequate servers.

We laid that foundation, a foundation that I must say I for one am extremely proud of. Both ***Commander*** and Bravo are trying to get PR to that level as we speak, which is why you don't seem them much. So in essence, what we started way back when BF2 was a new game, has been handed off to you guys like one relay runner to another. That doesn't mean the fundamental aspects of the game have changed from then till now.

Just like anything, it grows, and becomes something bigger than when it started. Guys like Bravo are the REASON you have TTP right now. I know you're a great player Rico, and you've brought a lot of stuff to the TTP table, just please remember that BF2 on TTP was a ghost town before we reinvented it, and turned it into what it is now. That's the hallmark of TTP's existence.

Hell, I've learned a fair amount from Bravo (usually at the business end of an assault rifle). In my eyes, Bravo doesn't need to prove himself to anyone. He's earned the right to simply say something, and have it be treated as fact. And hopefully, my post will reveal to the community that Bravo indeed knows what he's talking about.

Though, it would be nice to see my old friend on the server every once in a while...

I have a few mentors in BF2, guys like Ranger, Jeep, Kel, and yes Bravo. I still learn little things all the time when I play, but then again I am a.total.n00b, and fully admit it. The game was a few years old when I began playing it, and is a couple of years older now, but I doubt you guys have discovered anything new and exhilarating in the last 6 months that have not been done countless times before by the people that came before you.

Getting back on topic Dave, making this post was a good start. Now the forum regs know you are putting your hat in the ring and will be looking for you to start a squad.

There's been some great suggestions, and now you have an audience.

I'll be looking for your squad when I get in there.

    Re: Squad Leader suggestions

Oh, forgot the OP when I replied before. I am sure I will be told how wrong I am, but so be it. My take is you are called a squad LEADER, not a COMMANDER. A commander sits back and gives commands, and a squad leader should be leading. Maybe that is why I do so much, but I lead my 5 man Army to the battle any chance I can. The other piece of advice I would give is pick the flag you feel is most vital to the battle, and try to own it. I am sure everyone that has been in my squad on Kubra, not that I am the only one, knows that I love lower dam as US. My only goal is to secure and hold that flag. It provides a forward spawn point, gives us a second chopper, and usually makes the opfor fear losing the airfield. So try to figure out an objective and go all out for it.
