Yeah, the fighting commander rule is more of a case-by-case type thing. When server population is low, a fighting commander, as long as he is responsive to his squad leaders' requests is fine. Once you have 2 full squads per side is when you should start backing off and concentrating on commanding. I've found fighting commanders are more effective on titan mode maps than conquest.

In conquest, fighting commanders are best served to back-cap any flags the enemy may have taken behind your advancing forces. UAV and Sat Scans are extremely important in this mode, since proper intelligence of enemy strengths and weaknesses can help prevent ticket loss.

In titan mode, I will very often head down into the cargo bay right before shields drop, setup an infantry sensor and a turret and hold out until the squad I select is setup. I will then typically go outside the shields and out of harm's way once a defense is established. If my defense squad is overrun, I will pop back down and help however I can until order can be restored. Since tickets don't come into play, intelligence isn't quite as critical (but still important.)

I'm amazed at some of the comments. If the round had been lost we'd be saying "Because you were fighting and not commanding" but since the round was one we think it's OK? That's a big negatory ghost rider.
My understanding of the fighting commander rule is as long as it does not interfere with their commanding it is fine.

A commander setting up shop on top of a key flag/silo/console behind his team and fighting when the action comes to him is fine, as long as he is not neglecting his commander duties.
