You can grab certain awards/medals as a commander.

It may be considered somewhat bad form on TTP, but if you sit in an APC and command from there (which I've ended up doing on maps like Kubra Dam to prevent hostiles from stealing the asset), you can manage to get veteran armor (that's how I got it as GySgt). I only command if nobody else has been doing it for 2 minutes after the round has started (or if we've lost more than a couple of flags), I will command with what I spawned as - this has led me to get medals as: medic, AT, engineer, support. I almost never spawn sniper and rarely spawn assault (at least never when I ended up as commander), so I haven't gotten medals for those kits yet (although commanding behind enemy lines (like from fallen HQ on Songhua Stalemate) as a sniper is probably a good idea, I always forget to).

Commanding from AA is a great place to get AA medals through arty. Same as MGs and TOWs like the gas station on Karkand. Medals and badges are cheap thrills added to the game. Honestly, I think the bling bling of pins in 2142 makes it annoying every time. It's fascinating how much we fall in love with the thought of badges and medals etc... ooooh a shiny spoon!!!
