STO Lives!
Just thought I'd put that one up.
Anyways, a Trek mmo would be interesting, but as with EVERY Trek game that has ever been released, the promises the developer makes are not found anywhere in game (see Star Trek: Legacy for examples). If such an mmo were to have any chance of "making it big," if you will, then considerable effort will need to be put into the project to make it on-par with the modded versions of the older games. That means making models equal to or better than the ones that have been created for, say, Bridge Commander.
Case in point. The stock Galaxy-class from BC:
Not bad, but it is easily eclipsed by the fan-made models:
Notice the difference in quality between what was promised to be the most amazing graphics in a Trek game, and what was done in someone's home over a couple weekends.
It also means adding features that are a part of the Stark Trek universe. In Starfleet Academy, you could ram other ships. This feature hasn't been seen since. In Legacy, it was promised that you'd be able to change the Captains of the ships in your fleets. That feature was absent in the released version of the game. Multi Vector Assault Mode -- the awesomeness of the Prometheus separating into three ships and then destroying its foes -- has been promised time and again, but has never been successfully implemented in the stock game.
My point is, if this is going to be done, then go all the way. Don't allow anything to be left out. Do the job that is required, do it all the way (not half-assed), and do it right.
