Was about to reply that it sounds like video settings related cause the same thing would happen with my geforce 256 card when it got older and incapable of running anything beyond basic internet and office apps. 2142 would freeze like you mentioned, only it would at least let me join a game and play for 10 min before it froze on me and forced a hard reset of the machine cause everything locked up.
