Special forces is funny in the steam edition.
Start the game, then go to the server browser. Now uncheck the box that says "Same Mod only". Then refresh the server list. Now there will be SF servers in the list (signified by the little green 2 in front of their name in the list) find one you want to join and click to join it. Steam will close BF2 and open BF2:SF and automatically go to that server.
It's kind of a roundabout way, but it's the only way I've found.

Re: BF2 Compete Collection
Actually, it's running both Vanilla and SF as 'mods' IE the files to run both versions are in the Battlefield2/mods folder. So there must be a way to make a shortcut for the BF2.exe that would load SF by default.... I'm just to lazy to figure it out.
I mean, it's not like I play SF (except to get the unlocks). I loved the game, but damn does playing on random ass servers suck. TKs, no one squadded up.... it just isn't worth it.

Re: BF2 Compete Collection
Special Forces essentially is a mod for bf2, so it does use the same exe. I still run the disc version of bf2 and here are the shortcut it installed for both games, if it helps any...
"vanilla" bf2...
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1
"SF" bf2...
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +modPath mods/xpack +ignoreAsserts 1
so one thing you can maybe try is "create a desktop shortcut" from the steam games menu, then add the additional commandline options and run SF from that. also, there is a slight possibilty you can directly run the exe, and create shortcuts to that, and not have to load it through steam. for example, i have company of heroes installed from steam, yet i can navigate directly to the game exe and it will load from that w/o even having steam open. for example, i can just run it from here...
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\company of heroes\RelicCOH.exe
so if thats possible to do with the steam version of bf2, just find the corresponding bf2.exe nested w/in the steam files and create shortcuts with the above commandline arguments for each game, ie...
vanilla
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1
sf
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +modPath mods/xpack +ignoreAsserts 1
again, i dont have the steam version and dont know the exact file nesting, or if that will even work, but just something worth trying :P only catch being that it wont be a cutesy launch from steam. :P
