Thread: Help running BF2 on steam

I tried a while back and got pissed when it wouldnt work, gave up for a while.
I bought BF2(on steam), never played it before thought I would give it a try.
I load the game and everything is cool, find a server, tried several different ones. I click join and the screen disappears and I am back at desktop. I have tried single player, tried renaming a file in my documents. Not sure where to go.

Running Vista 64 bit
On ASUS p5e3 deluxe with Q9450 (quad core @ 2.66) processor
6gb ram
saphire 4870 card

Anything else you need to know just ask.

I have tried a punkbuster update thing, tried adjusting video settings, tried cursing loudly... None have worked

Any help from those of you that can, I would greatly appreciate it. Have always wanted to try this damn game and have been really frustrated not being able to.

Try running as administrator and in XP compatability mode, fixes 40-50% of problems with the game.

I tried that, am I doing it wrong? I tried in compatability mode, it asks for permission to run everytime now but no difference.

I'd check your video settings. Make sure that you're not trying to run at a resolution (or a refresh rate) your monitor doesn't support. Try dialing down your graphics, specifically, disable things like Anti-Aliasing and see if things work for you.

It just worked for me... didn't have any of the problems you are having.

i tried to set the res at 1440x900 what my monitor normally runs at but says I have to restart for settings to go in effect but they dont change after restart
