    exactly. those clowns came to the table imagining the childish, nameless, faceless aspects of console gaming somehow appeals to PC gamers. There's currently 9000+ CoD4 servers running. I bet there's not so many MW2 ones, though none are tracked.

    just ridiculous.

    I absolutely agree with what Big is saying. The game companies are wanting to hide their code farther and farther away from any interaction the user can touch. Modders can't even see when the events they need to hook into are happening.

    The shining counter example to this is Valve (and especially TF2). They are actively listening to their modding and mapmaking community and updating the CORE GAME FILES to accomidate changes or crazy ideas that the public wants to do. You end up with updates that include shit like:

    * Added new "func_flag_alert" entity that fires an alert when a player carrying a flag starts touching the entity
    * Added server ConVar "bot_crouch" to make bots crouch
    * Added model override for item_teamflag entity
    * Added ability to turn off particle trail for players carrying the item_teamflag entity
    * Updated team_train_watcher to support 8 cp/track links (was previously 4)
    All of those changes are being made soley because some modder out there want to make maps with 8 control points or 8 sets of train tracks. Or wants to have a custom game mode where there are multiple CTF flags and they do special things (like unlock doors or trigger teleports). There have been numerous updates that change what in game events get reported in the logs to make parsing them in greater depth easier.

    And you know what? This kind of openness works. Valve is being innundated with community generated content. And most of it is crap, but some of it is awesome enough that Valve just buys the rights to it from the creators and makes it "official" content.

    It's a win-win for everyone.
