Question about kicks vs res slots
This afternoon I finally got onto the full server but then 20 min later I apparently lost connection, which is unusual since I haven't had any kick issues with the server in a few months. I figured I got kicked because someone came in with a reserve slot. Does it happen this way? do normal users get booted if someone has a reserved slot?

Re: Question about kicks vs res slots
Short answer: no, in spite of what others will tell you.
But please, details on this. At what stage in the game (during play, in pre-game countdown, after map-load, etc.) did you get disconnected? What messages, if any, did you receive (ex., "there is a problem with your connection", "your connection to the server has been lost" or something involving PunkBuster or admin decisions)? Do you know what the exact playercount was when you disconnected?

Re: Question about kicks vs res slots
It was right in the middle of gameplay during the map where its all farmland. I was walking with my AT kit scoped in on an APC. Then the game paused with the common message "there is a problem" with your connection. About 30 seconds later it said the connection to server has been lost in the little dialogue box back at the BF2 main screen.
oh, I'm pretty sure the player count was 60 , and 4 reserved slots taken

BF2 reserves a set number of slots for people who are on the reserved slot list (in TTP's case, 4). If all 60 of the non-reserved slots AND the 4 reserved slots are full, the next reservist to attempt to connect will get the 'server is full' message. No one gets kicked. As people disconnect from the server, the slots are added back to the reserved slot pool until such a time as there are 60 or fewer people connected.

Re: Question about kicks vs res slots
that's just false. absolutely false.
That's saying that the server can only have 4 reservists on it, pretty much. That...there's no point in even buying a reserved slot, since once 4 are on there, the server doesn't given preference to who is and who isn't a reservist.
and that is NOT TRUE. The server DOES KICK NON-RESERVISTS. 2142 will do this till the server is 50% reservists (meaning 24 connected). BF2 will do it up to the full 60. The 4 we have set is for connectability. Most servers have it set to 2. Dumb servers have it set to 1. We set it to 4 so more people can try to connect at once when the server is full.
But again....I don't know HOW many times I've joined the BF2 server when 10 admins and 10 reservists have been connected. That's 20 reservists.....and I can get on when it's 60/64. And so can any other reservist/admin.
stop spreading propaganda, draco. you're wrong.

I am not going to get in the argument of whether he is right or wrong, but he is not saying only 4 admins/reservists can join. What he is saying is if there are 60 players on, and a reservist/admin joins thus making 61, the server itself will not kick a non-reservist to get back to 60. It will simply wait for a player, or players, to be kicked for some other reason, or disconnect. Eventually you could get to 64 reservists on the server, but in his theory if you had 60 non-reservists, then one reservist joined, and no players ever left it would stay at 61 forever. Once again not saying he is right, just trying to better explain his theory.

Re: Question about kicks vs res slots
and if I remember, the kick message is simply "disconnected from server". In-game, and in the logs/console.
Who spreads these lies? who made up this version of how they think it works, and "taught" all you people that it must be that way?
Why didn't any of you say "wait a second...if that's true....why aren't there ever 64 people on the server playing at once?"
lies....lies lies lies.....
