Also, I don't think its your internet BF2 only needs 128k of bandwith to run. I more leaning towards that its BF2.exe is trying to use more memory than it is allowed to. Try seeing how much virtual memory is allocated for your machine. If I remember right the steps are right click on my computer and find System Properties then go to Advanced / Performance Options / Advanced / the Virtual memory. But that's my 2 cents.

Side note: Make sure you are running it as administrator...

    -ran as administrator/UAC off

I'm thinking it is internet related because of the loading time where the "2" comes up, and when I can press join game. And even when the game lets me press join game it will show the server with no people in it. Fuck, I have no idea what to do.
Make sure you have SP 2 or greater (I don't know if there is a later SP, I just know SP 2 solved many many issues) for vista... or you will encounter many more weird problems. (PS. This error is not related to internet)

Since, you said you had the earliest install disk. Try installing the patches separately in increasing order...For example if your install disks are with patch 1.2 install it but instead of installing 1.41. then 1.5. Install path 1.21 then 1.3/1.4/1.41/1.5 and so on. I know this might take some time.

Hey Reject, try swapping the memory modules. If you have a bad block on one of them it can cause this. Most cheap {free} memory test programs wont catch certain types of issues. If you have too, eliminate the one of the gigs of ram to see if it's the problem and rotate them until you locate if that is indeed a possible issue.

Re: Getting error when trying to play multiplayer.

I just used my neighbours internet and I was able to connect to a BF2 server. So I am pretty sure the problem is internet related, the only problem is I don't know what to do... I guess I just troubleshoot any possibility.

    Update: It works! YAYYYYYYYYYY
