I feel like a total SHIT!

Well some of the people I work with I have been working with for over 20 years. So I do consider a lot of them friends. The guy that died was new but others at the company I have known for a long time and they are hurting by this...

It's our emotions and feelings that make us human. There's no reason that you should feel as bad as if the situation happened to a close family member or friend, but saying that you shouldn't feel at all is ridiculous.
Didn't say you shouldn't, just didn't say you had to either. Feelings are by and large an opt in thing, you feel bad in the social situations that you've learned you should feel bad in. Given the level of control people have available over their emotional states, though admittedly few of them exercise this consciously, if you don't want to feel bad then don't.

Sure, culture and experience play a large role in how a person reacts in a given social situation. However, I don't think emotions can be turned on and off like a light switch. No matter how those emotional responses get there, they are ingrained in our brains and thus out of our conscious control.
