Re: Battlefield 2142 - 1.51 Closed BETA
Karkand in 2142 will suck hard.
The primary measure of defense that the MEC has on Karkand is on being able to control access to the backfield flags by closing off the river. In BF2, that's accomplished by destroying the north bridge, heavily mining the southern land bridge, and watching for any APCs that try to float past through the water.
In 2142, bridges are indestructible, so the north bridge can never be closed properly. In 2142, APCs cannot float, so the river has to be made shallow enough that they can cross anywhere, making mining the southern approach meaningless. Add in the APC launch pods (able to get all manner of troops to high vantage points and hidey-holes that are impossble to reach on an FF-on BF2 server), and it will be impossible for the PAC to effectively control or retain ownership of their backfield flags, unless that is all they ever focus their team on. At anything less than a full server, expect the PAC to lose consistently and without recourse.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Also, I don't know if they're just placeholders, but it looks like they're re-using quite a lot of the BF2 buildings on the map. Doesn't make sense that they would still be around and in exactly the same shape 200 years from now.

Re: Battlefield 2142 - 1.51 Closed BETA
Draco - as far as primary or only measures of defense being destroying a bridge not sure but I am thinking that some of the dynamics of the defensive weapons in 2142 could negate that necessity.
There are several methods possible to stop APCs from crossing any stretch of territory. EMP Mines, Motion Mines, EMP Grenades, the faithful Pilum (hell that might even get walker back into the game) and the trusty old Jihad Jeep/FAV to name just a few.
Also - as in Wake 2142 there is a land bridge connecting (submerged though) the two tips of the island. I'd imagine that it would be something along those lines as opposed to having to decrease the depth of the entire river.
As for the really high spots - if the attackers can get up there - there is now reason why the defenders should not be able to knock them off (whether by getting up there themselves or orbital striking them into oblivion).
I am intrigued to see what changes this brings to the games since the old maps, while fun, are a bit long in the tooth as all of the attack/defense strats are very well known by now. And since Jason Brice did the 2142-Karkand map, I hold out high hopes for it. He also did 2142-Shingle and that is a very fun map to play and fairly well balanced to boot (I've played both sides of that map and no one side seems to have a decided advantage).

And rather than destroy the bridge a good rail gun placement or two would work pretty good defending that stretch. I can see the bridge not being demo'd and the river being deep all along it's run. An APC pod might make the jump of the river and that be the way to get behind the defense.
