Something tells me BF3 might be more targeted to consoles after what BS I just read on GI.
1 or 2 people using CO are you kidding me?... How many times has CO been proven in game that he or she can turn the tide of the battle with a few strategic asset and order placements.. Now you got alot of idiots thinking they can do what ever the hell they want and not work as a team...
I think just how dice is talking BF3 is becoming less and less satisfying....

My personal opinion is that while commander can be positive, it isn't necessary to winning. That is what the game should be about. More times than not, commanders tend to get in the way of experienced squad leaders who know what it takes to win a round. I believe commanders should be limited to supply drops and arty strikes and not micromanaging the battle. To me the real bosses should be the squad leaders and the commander should play a supporting role to that effect.

The commander allowed for in game communication with the whole team. The only way to get that without the commander is to have 3rd party voip.

I consider BC2 to be a completely singular player oriented game, team-work is "nearly" impossible or a pain in the ass to set-up.
As for the importance of the commander, I've been privileged with playing some amazing game where the ennemy without a commander was eliminated by our side with a GREAT commander and solid teams. It was Fushe Pass and the game was over in 5 minutes with the highest score at most 10 points away from the last. ALL the team got specific objectives by the commander, relayed to squad member, allocation for artillery and supply, intel on the ennemy presence/movement and even the commander's overall strategic plan.... It was a glorious day !!!!
I've been playing those multiplayer games for ages (Hint: check my avatar)...... But the Command and Control system in BF2 is the clincher. We've had mods aplenty since 1942 that played with all the parameters. Desert Combat and Forgotten Hopes stand up as the best, but the BF2/2142 game with it's TOE is different from all those before and since..... That is the only difference that counts; the rest is cosmetics or context related.
The command structure associated with VOIP of BF2 separates a bunch of shooting idiots (Quake-Unreal) from team playing gamers.
Oh, and one more thing; If we talk eye-candy; I sure would like the capability of having "pre-made skins" type appearances, not just clown make-up customisation. Always wanted to get a French Foreign Legion dressed soldier with Kepi and beard.
