The friction for me is not just the money, it is the fact that at some point in the next month or two I will have to reformat this computer, and build another. I can wait until then to upgrade both. Also, I lied about the money factor as I forgot I was gifted 2 copies of 7 that are indeed legit. Time and PITA is more of the friction for me.

You'll like Windows 7, Civil. It took 2 minutes to install on my laptop. It also takes up less hard drive space; probably not too important for you, but my laptop only has 128GB (SSD).
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.

Despite all assurances otherwise, AE... Windows 7 adoption rate has been faster than ANY previous windows version. So I think your original argument about it being problematic for people to get windows 7 doesn't hold a lot of water.
Last time I saw an article about it, the adoption rate of windows 7 was 3 times that of XP and more than that with vista.

Re: Battlefield Not recession proof....
I'm willing to bet that within the next year or two MS will be putting out another version of Windows that will replace Win7 and it will be the only way to get the new Directx, i.e. force gamers to buy and upgrade if they want to play new games. It sucks, but that's just the way it's going to be unless you stop buying new games or start demanding that games be made in something other than directx or be ported to other OSes. Right now MS is the position to squeeze gamers because they're the monopoly in PC gaming with their proprietary directx.
Also, Mobius, upgrade your freaking PC or stop complaining. It's been almost six years since BF2 came out. For most sane individuals, six years is many technological generations ago. Something to think about before you turn into some crazed, grey neck-bearded old fogey clutching desperately to his Windows 98 desktop because it's the "gold standard of OSes".
